Daiwa Rabin is not a grinding wheel?

  • Daiwa Rabin uses rubber as the bonding agent, and its major characteristic is a specific feature called "rubber elasticity"that is not to be seen in other tools.

There has been almost no research regarding the grinding and polishing mechanism of a rubber grinding stone, and while we are not able to provide a logical explanation of how rubber elasticity works in grinding and polishing, based on experience and fragmentary knowledge, it seems to have a different aspect from the mechanism of a grinding wheel and cutting tools, for which research has been progressing.
A grinding wheel is explained as an air bubble structure including abrasive grains: cutting edge and a bonding agent, whose protruding amount is adjusted by truing, and with which a work piece is cut by rotating the abrasive grains: cutting edge at a "high speed". Hardness of the abrasive grains, which are closely held by a bonding agent, an air bubble structure, and autogenesis of the cutting edge are all important.
* The elasticity of an elastic grinding wheel resinoid and rubber elasticity are very different.

It is not rare to come across cases where it has been indicated that despite using an elastic (soft) rubber as the bonding agent, a grinding force greater than that of a grinding wheel is seen as long as the operation is compatible with Daiwa Rabin.

Although it is often questioned if wearing is faster because of a rubber grinding stone, to the surprise of users who have actually used Daiwa Rabin, one of its wonders is that as long as the work piece is not too rough, and the material of the grinding stone and usage conditions can be set properly, the life is longer than that of a grinding wheel.
(The fact that rubber having an excellent composition has good wear resistance can be imagined by taking into consideration the tires of a car.)

Interestingly,
from the state of the polishing surface and the polishing powder, it is believed that the failure mode is close to the ductile breaking mode, and therefore, another major advantage is that there is almost no need of worrying about scratches being caused by the polishing powder.

Rubber elasticity is characterized by deformation according to the load as well as a high amount of deformation. Thus, in order to draw the performance of Daiwa Rabin and to use it safely, its use at a high-speed rotation is not suitable, and it is important to strike the perfect balance between the rotation speed and polishing pressure, which is the main point for the use of Daiwa Rabin. Because Daiwa Rabin can be used even without high-speed rotation, the concern of burns due to the grinding heat from the grinding wheel, surface alteration, and residual stress are reduced.

As rubber wears out finely even when the surface appears to be clogged, its continuous use is possible, and the efforts necessary for tool management such as chipping and falling of abrasive grains, besides dressing, can be reduced immensely.

Although the progress made in high-speed grinding and high-seed milling is remarkable, the various accompanying costs of increasing the rigidity and precision of tools and equipment, selecting tools and performing truing, performing tool management such as dressing, refining drive programs, and taking measures against the increasing heat are also increasing. By combining a finishing operation, which makes use of rubber elasticity, with the grinding and cutting process, the quality requirements are met and the process is further improved, and we hope that Daiwa Rabin would be useful in realizing the ideal manufacturing process.

Combining together the constant pressure and eccentricity (or shaking) mechanism with the excellent rubber features of Daiwa Rabin, has opened the path to automation of mirror finishing of aspherical areas as well as mirror finishing of metal molds, which was difficult to perform in the past.

 * Although this is confusing, "rubber elasticity" is very different from general elasticity.
Rubber elasticity is characterized by deformation according to the load as well as a high amount of deformation. Mark "Risks Concerning Rubber Elasticity"
The typical CM type curves easily only by pressing with a finger.

As compared to a grinding wheel, the condition of the polishing powder is slightly different, and there have been indications about
the element of ductile breaking.
