  • Requests During Selection of a Grinding Stone

What is preferred for stainless steel polishing?

Putting forward an answer to this question based on only this much information would be unreasonable and a difficult thing to do.

  • Stainless steel is being used in various substances in several fields, such as huge plant equipment, construction material, kitchen instruments, tableware, medical devices, even in automobile components in very different forms for manifold and injection, food manufacturing equipment, semiconductor manufacturing equipment, optical components, etc…, with a large difference in polishing requirements.
We request you to provide some introduction to your requirements, such as "We manufacture ...." or "This component is for ...".
  • Even as regards a "mirrored finish", it is difficult to achieve a deep gloss as with buffing using a blue stick, but if the polishing area is too restricted, the pre-process of composite electro polishing of the semiconductor manufacturing equipment, and mirror polishing of optical components is partially possible.

Mirrored surface finish ... A difficult to imagine term, Part 1

"We would like to use the grinding stone for mirror finishing of glass."

We think you can easily imagine that even when we talk of "mirrored finish” polishing, the level of finishing differs substantially depending on the field, product, and functional requirements.
Even in the case of the same product, for example as for the surface and edge of a lens, the requirement level varies greatly depending on the area.
We request you to inform us about the industrial field, the kind of the product, and the required level of the "mirrored finish".
What is troublesome is that in several cases, when the "appearance of a mirrored finish" and "to the extent that the face can be seen" is claimed, a judgment same as the judgment of quality by the person manufacturing the product on a daily basis is difficult to make.
We can send you the grinding stone and ask you to actually perform polishing, and understand the situation after receiving your evaluation.

Scratches ... A difficult to image term, Part 2

This term also indicates various different actual conditions, and is quite difficult to imagine.
"Removing scratches from aluminum" For example, even when you hear of chuck marks, it is very difficult to imagine.
We would like you to actually experience the use of the grinding stone.
In the case of a scratch, sometimes, even if the scratch has been corrected, the corrected surface becomes different from the surrounding portion, which also needs to be adjusted.

Burrs ... A difficult to imagine term, Part 3

Same as scratches, even if we receive the drawing of the work piece with the location of the burr perfectly marked, it is difficult for us to accurately understand the condition of burrs because unlike some companies that perform grinding and cutting daily, Daiwa Kasei hardly uses machine tools and cutting tools for the manufacture of rubber grinding stones.
Condition of the burr; Inclined, somewhat sharp (also residual stress)
Although the performance of Daiwa Rabin can be exhibited and it is being used widely, as far as de-burring is concerned, detailed information is definitely important.

For de-burring

We have received a drawing of the grinding stone for the purpose of de-burring ...

Unlike grinding wheels and electro-coated tools, or cutting tools, rubber elasticity is a major feature of Daiwa Rabin.
From experience, we have learnt of an aspect that is (perhaps) different in the grinding and polishing mechanism, and in the case of de-burring, although thinking of the shape of the grinding stone based on an image of a cutting tool might not be wrong, a portion that can be processed easily might become an excess cost factor.

*Though in some cases, an angle similar to that of a cutting tool may be taken into consideration, what is slightly different from cutting with a blade (cutting edge) is that Daiwa Rabin gets deformed slightly due to the rubber elasticity, and performs the cutting operation due to pressing of the abrasive grains (the aspect of the ductile breaking mode is seen).

What is important is the size and shape of the area of the work piece where de-burring is to be performed.

How should the grinding stone come in contact for easy removal of burr (*)? How would the process of eating into the rubber change?
Since the wear-out progresses slowly, having this size would enable usage over a long period of time, etc…. In the case of de-burring, one of the important points to be considered is what should be the size and shape of the grinding stone with respect to the size and shape of the area with burrs, and how should the grinding stone "come in contact".

* As regards this point, it must be noted that it is difficult to understand the condition of burrs. Also, it is not possible to understand the features of the material in the same way as a person who actually processes the material, and trying out the "contact method of the grinding stone for easy removal of burrs" to find out the best method will also lead to the selection of the most suitable grinding stone.

It would not be fair to provide an estimate by seeing only the drawings of the grinding stone that have been provided.
Although at times, we have received drawings of the work piece with clearly-marked burr locations, there are certain restrictions in the mode of contact of the grinding stone depending on the equipment that is used. We also request you to inform us about the method of use of the grinding stone.

Don't you have a softer (harder) grinding stone?

Although this is a simple request, it is a difficult question to answer.

For example, there may be cases such as

Because the contact with the work piece is hard ...
To be able to fit into the shape ...
We want a softer stone.
Because we want to improve the surface roughness ...
We want a softer stone.
Because we want to improve the cutting quality ...
We want a softer stone.

* Here what is important is the part "Because we want to ... ".

The request for a "harder" grinding stone is again tricky.

It is natural that in most cases the desire is to prolong the life of the grinding stone, but there are also cases when a harder grinding stone is desired to improve the cutting quality, and determining whether the grinding stone should be made harder or conversely, softer in order to improve the cutting quality depends on the specific operation details and the condition of the work piece, although both may be correct. (It might not be possible to give a clear-cut answer as to how it would work in reality.)

The result may be divided since hardening the grinding stone might improve its life, and at the same time might make it brittle thus hastening its wear-out.

There are cases when the life of the CM type has been found to be longer than the UN type, which must be hard. Thus, the complexity of wearing of rubber is understood. (Wearing of rubber is one of the difficult topics of discussion in major research fields.)
